Railway Bridge over the Rhine River between Kehl (Germany) and Strasbourg (France)

"Of all rivers, I prefer the Rhine. It is now a year, when passing the bridge of boats at Kehl, since I first saw it. I remember that I felt a certain respect, a sort of adoration, for this old, this
classic stream... Yes, the Rhine is a noble river—feudal, republican, imperial—worthy, at the same time, of France and of Germany."

Victor Hugo

“Urban planning and architecture have a strong influence on our well-being.”

Dietmar Feichtinger, designer of this bridge

Bridge over the Oresund strait between Malmoe (Sweden) and Copenhagen (Denmark)

Driving slowly to the bridge
With nothing left that we can give
We smile at this ugly world
It never really suited you
Old songs leave long shadows
Makes you shut down all your emotions
Money needs money, and slums need the poor
Curled like an animal lying on the floor
Curled like an animal lying on the floor

Song Walk me to the bridge,
by Manic Street Preachers inspired in this bridge

Laufen Bridge over the Rhine River between Laufenburg (Germany) and Laufenburg, Aargau (Switzerland)

The image of the frontier is probably one of the oldest images of mankind, and it is not surprising that we should find it hard to get rid of.

Avenida Bridge between Irún, Guizpuzcoa (Spain) and Hendaya, Pyrenées Atlantiques (France)

"This bridge is a symbol of the history of Irun and with this opening, it recovers its original function. The bridges are not designed to cut off communication, to act as a border, the bridges are designed to unite, to connect the two sides of the Bidasoa and in this case the two cities, Irun and Hendaia."

José Antonio Santano, mayor of Irun.

Ambassador Bridge over the Detroit River between Detroit, Michigan (United States) and Windsor, Ontario (Canada)

The Ambassador Bridge
In the light of a silver moon
Detroit smiles back at me
As I'm making my way to you
The Ambassador Bridge
And the pale yellow-orange dawn
On my way back to Canada
Sure as anything you're the one

From the song Ambassador Bridge

Bridge over the Narva River between Narva (Estonia) and Ivangorod (Russia)

Narva is a strange place, almost an aberration. On the very edge of Nato's eastern flank, it is Estonia's third biggest city - but 97% of the nearly 60,000 people living there talk Russian....

It sits on the western bank of the River Narva that flows into the Baltic Sea. On the eastern bank is Russia. To a first-time visitor it feels like a classic Cold War frontier. Two giant fortresses face each other on opposing sides of the river, with the international border running down the middle.

Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge over the St. Mary River in Sault Ste. Marie between Ontario (Canada) and Michigan (United States)

 The workmanship of Nature's hand
No rarer gem than this has shown;
The glamor soft of fairy land
Upon this luring realm is thrown.
On boulder vast and current swift
The first gleams of the morning quiver,
While in a dreary calm I drift
Adown St. Mary's shining river.

Sami Bridge across the Tana River between Finnmark (Norway) and Utsjoki (Finland)

The Salmon, that strong and precious fish swimming along the bottom. It will follow the Tana River through the earth if that is the course to follow. Once again, it swims the long way to reach the source, turns black and stops eating. Once again, it turns back to where it came from, to the great ocean where salmon abound. Once again, it glistens in the water when it returns to its own seas. There it will find herring to feed on, grow fat again, and again look like its old self.

Holzbrucke over the Rhine River between Bad Sackingen (Germany) and Stein, Aargau (Switzerland)

The river nobly foams and flows,
The charm of this enchanted ground,
And all its thousand turns disclose
  Some fresher beauty varying round:
The haughtiest breast its wish might bound
  Through life to dwell delighted here;
Nor could on earth a spot be found
To nature and to me so dear,
Could thy dear eyes in following mine
Still sweeten more these banks of Rhine!

Rainbow Bridge across the Niagara River between the states of Ontario (Canada) and New York (United States)

Heno, the Thundergod lived in a huge grotto behind the Great Fall (Horseshoe). He protected people along the River from a huge serpent which lived in the Gorge. One encounter with the serpent was so tremendous that the middle of the Great Fall was knocked down, thus creating the horsehoe shaped crestline of the now Horseshoe Falls.

International Bridge crossing the Guadiana River between Ayamonte, Huelva (Spain) and Castro Marim, Algarve (Portugal)

En las noches de luna y clavel
de Ayamonte hasta Villareal
sin rumbo por el rio, entre suspiros
una canción viene y vá
Que la canta María
al querer de un andaluz.
María es la alegría, y es la agonía
que tiene el sur.

International Bridge over the Minho River between Tui, Pontevedra (Spain) and Valença do Minho (Portugal)

Serpenteando vai o Miño
fondo ás veces como o mare,
pero sempre caladiño.
Caladiño e misterioso
como sombra ou paso leve,
que non quer trubar reposo.

Reposo nunca trubara
desque é Miño, nin tampouco
do seu sono despertara.

From A Volta ó Lar
Rosalía de Castro
