Fangsheng Bridge crossing the river Chaogang in Zhujiajao, Shanghai (China)

Emperor Yu, while engaged in curbing the great flood that scourged the country, had the assistenace of a dragon to map out waterways with its writhing tail. Endowed with the ability to summon clouds and bring forth rain as well as control floods that causes destruction and death, the dynamic dragon represented a beneficent power. In averting drought providing needed water, thus insuring a good harvest, a dragon contributed to the stability of the empire. On the Fangsheng Bridge in Zhujiajiao, are stone tablets called Dragon Gate stones, which are engraved with eight coiling dragons encircling a shinning pearl.
