Main Street Bridge over the Saint Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida (United States)

I 'm not afraid of the black man running

He's got it right, he's got a better life coming
And I don't care what the captain said
I fold it right at the top of my head
I lost my sight and the state packs in
I follow my heart and it leads me right to Jackson

Lyrics of Jacksonville

song by Sufjan Stevens

Bridge of Lions across Matanzas Bay in Saint Augustine, Florida (United States)

The state with the prettiest name,
the state that floats in brackish water,
held together by mangrave roots
that bear while living oysters in clusters,
and when dead strew white swamps with skeletons,
dotted as if bombarded, with green hummocks
like ancient cannon-balls sprouting grass.
The state full of long S-shaped birds, blue and white,
and unseen hysterical birds who rush up the scale
every time in a tantrum.
Tanagers embarrassed by their flashiness,
and pelicans whose delight it is to clown;
who coast for fun on the strong tidal currents
in and out among the mangrove islands
and stand on the sand-bars drying their damp gold wings
on sun-lit evenings.

From the poem Florida

Elizabeth Bishop

Sunshine Skyway Bridge over Tampa Bay between Saint Petersburg and Bradenton, Florida (United States)

"La structure comportait deux haubanages évoquant des nageoires dorsales. De loin, alors que le soleil plongeait vers la mer et que le ciel virait au violet, elles paraissaient peintes en or sombre, mais en nous engageant sur le pont, nous avons constaté qu’elles étaient constituées de plusieurs câbles jaunes formant des triangles de plus en plus petits. À la base de ces câbles se trouvaient des projecteurs éclairés qui, associés au couchant, conféraient aux nageoires une nuance dorée."

Sunshine Skyway Bridge over the Tampa Bay in Florida (United States)

Blinded by the lights
Hold you through forever
Won't let you go
'Cause if you jump I will jump too
We will fall together from the buildings ledge
Never looking back at what
We've done
We'll say it was love
'Cause I would die for you on Skyway Avenue

"Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world."

Walt Disney

Sunshine Skyway Bridge over the Tampa Bay between Saint Petersburg and Bradenton, Florida (United States)

"Mayday! Mayday! Vessel has just hit the Skyway bridge! The Skyway bridge is down! Get all emergency equipment out to the Skyway bridge! The Skyway bridge is down! This is Mayday! Emergency situation! Stop the traffic on that Skyway bridge!"

John Lerro, pilot of the freight that run

Sunshine Skyway Bridge over the Tampa Bay between Saint Petersburg and Bradenton, Florida (United States)

A few years after the bridge was opened, a woman jumped into the murky depths of the bay below. After that time, rumors began to circulate of a vanishing hitchhiker. Stories circulated of people who saw a beautiful blonde woman hitchhiking near the mid-span. When they stopped to pick her up, nothing seemed out of the ordinary but as the vehicle approached the summit of the bridge, she would begin to cry. When the driver turned to ask what was wrong they'd find themselves alone in the vehicle.

“Perhaps the bridge is just a foolish dream. But I don’t believe it. And I never will be satisfied until the bridge is built.”

George S. Gandy
